"MORE COULD BE DONE."
NUMBER TWO SCHEME,
WORK OF SUB-COMMITTEES
The opinion that Auckland was not taking as full an advantage as it might of the board's No, 2 scheme was expressed by Messrs. G. Finn and 0. Mcßrine, Auckland members of the Unemployment Board, on their arrival from Wellington this morning.
"There are over 100 criinmittees working under No. 2 scheme, and in most cases it is working excellently," they stated. "C4ood use of the scheme is being made in Wellington, for instance. There is no reason why more should not be done in Auckland."
It was pointed out by the 'members that to tide over a difficult time before the payment of sustenance, if sustenance had to be paid, the board had decided to extend No. 2 scheme to the extent that works concerning which commitments had been made before January 31 would still carry the subsidy, thus enabling them to proceed through February and possibly March.
The members mentioned that up to the present the board had liardlv been allowed breathing space, the demands for urgent assistance having been tio heavy. They felt that considerable progress had been made. It had not been possible, owing to pressure of work, for the three subcommittees recently appointed, to get down to business, but it was hoped that they would be able to make a definite start with theninquiries next week. It was anticipated that the recommendations- of the subcommittees would be such as to stimulate industry, both primary and secondary.
Mensrs. Mcßrine and Finn will leave for Wellington again on Monday night.
