FAMILY LIFE IN A £750 FLAT.
"MANY DO IT—AND MANY DON'T."
More questions concerning the incoine of a wife with £1500 a year were asked in the Chancery Division when, the hearing was resumed of the action brought by Mrs. Rence M. MacCaW, of Ladogan Gardens, S.W., against her husband, Captain Guy Hardy MacC'aw, o, Chester Terrace, Eaton Square, S.W., claiming an account of moneys and investments belonging to her which, she alleged, had been received by her luisbarid and not accounted for. The liability to render an account was denied by Captain Mac Caw, who said his wife liad full knowledge of all the transactions, of which she approved. Sir Patrick Hastings, K.C. (for Captain Mac Ca w, referring to a statement by Mrs. Mac Caw that she had lived within her income since she separated from her husband, asked her whether in November, 1920, she was informed by her bank that she was overdrawn to the extent of £613. Mrs. Mac Caw: That is quite true, but it is on my dividend account. Asked whether when they took a Cleveland How flat at a rent of £(>SO, running to £750 'in 1910, she considered it impossible for her husba'nd, his wife and baby to live on £2350 a year net, Mrs. Mac Caw replied that she did not. ilr. Justice Eve: A good many do it, and a great many people could not do it. Captain Mac Caw said that he became dissatisfied with his wife's attitude towards him. In December, 1915, he got ten days' leave, and it was decided that they should go to Bournemouth. "My wife and I disagreed a good deal about where we should * go," he continued. "I wished' to go to Eastbourne. My wife disliked Eastbourne and 1 was made to go to Bournemouth. I admit we did not arrive at Bournemouth on very good terms with each other, and the position culminated at breakfast on the Sunday, when my wife said to me, 'I think this marriage of ours is a mistake, and I suggest you should take steps to have a divorce as soon as possible.' That was "at a Bournemouth hotel."
