Discovery 50 Miles North of Antarctica.

MEETING WITH WHALERS.

(Received 11 a.m.) i SYDNEY, this day. Latest advices from Sir Douglas Mawsou state that his vessel the Discovery is now in open pack ice on the 142 nd meridian about 50 miles. north of the Antarctic coast. A howling blizzard with thick falling snow is at present dominating activities. In such wind and amongst glacons of heavy pressure ice, the greatest vigilance is required to preserve the ship from damage. "A new featuro developed," the message states, "when a multitude of birds were observed feeding off portion of a whale carcase, indicating whaling activities in the neighbourhood. By means of wireless we located the Norwegian whaling ship Kosmos (50 miles westward. Coal was needed and the captain of the Kosmos said ho could spare 50 tons. As we etood by a large tanker arrived from Europe to take ba,ck a shipment of oil. Thus from our icy wilderness we suddenly found ourselves'amongst a fleet'of ships and a hive of industry."
