ENGLAND FOLLOWS ON.
GAME AGAINST S. AFRICA,
ISO RUNS BEHIND,
CAPETOWN, January 4.
The' weather was warm and overcast and the wicket very easy, although it had one or two badly worn spots when the second Test match between England and South Africa was resumed to-day. Hammond and' Leyland continued staunchly and steadily to repair the earlier damage. As the attack was ineffective in the morning the batsmen subsequently became more enterprising. A promising partnership was unexpectedly broken when Hammond attempted a hard, straight drive. McMillan snapped up the low ball brilliantly. H'endren was unorthodox, and earned appreciation for his plucky manner in flinging caution to the winds and going for the bowling. He severely punished the bowlers and gradually improved the situation. Bell, after several innocuous suddenly struck deadly form after luncheon, and caused a drama, tic collapse, dismissing Leyland, Turnbull and Chapman in succession by identical fast off-swingers. He had then taken tluee wickets in seven overs for 10 runs. The dismissal of Hendren, who hit eight fours, by one of the worst balls of the day, proved the turning point, for although Voce, Tate and White made spirited and desperate attempts to save the follow on, Deane persevered with the slow bowlers McMillan and Balaskas. England was compelled to follow on and Hammona and Wyatt opened with
caution, in spite of the tired bowling. Hammond, when he had made four, gave a chance at point. Stumps were drawn with the total at 28. Details of the scores are as follow:— SOUTH AFRICA.
