THE NUNNELEY CASKET
WELLINGTON LADIES' LEAD.
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Friday. Play in the women's tennis contest for the Nunneley Casket, between Auckland and Wellington, was commenced to-day. Results were as follows, Auck'and players being mentioned first: —• Singles.—Miss Ramsay lost to Miss Nicholls, 5 —7, 2 —6; Miss Whitelaw lost to Mrs. Adams, I—6, o—6;0 —6; Misa Macfarlane beat Mrs. Melody, 6—4, 6—2; Miss Knight beat Miss North, 2—6, 6-4, 11—9. Doubles. —Misses Knight and Whitelaw lost to Miss Nicholls and Mrs. Adams, 2—6, 6—3, 3—6; Misses Macfarlane and Ramsay lost to Mrs. Melody and Miss North, 3—6, 5—7. . Wellington has won 4 matches and 78 games, and Auckland 2 matches and 58 games. There are still six matches to be decided, and play will start to-morrow at 1.30 p.m. The most exciting single of the day was that between Miss North and Misst Knight. Miss Knight lost the first set, won the second, and brought off a splendid last-minute recovery after being I—s1 —5 down in the third set.
