WORK STOPPED.

SOUTH WALES MINES. Government Makes Unsuccessful Effort. BOARD OF CONCILIATION. (British Official Wireless,) (Received 12 noon.) RUGBY, January 1. The Government made an unsuccessful effort yesterday to bring about a resumption of the negotiations in connection with the South Wales coalfields. Although a stoppage of work began today, it is hoped that it will be of short duration. A meeting of the Conciliation Board has been called for Saturday. Probably 150,000 men aro involved. No open concession has "been made by the owners, who< adtiere to their main point that a readjustment of hours must involve a reduction in wages. The decision of the miners' executive to agree to an examination of the possibilties by the Conciliation Board as to the extension to July of the present terms of employment suggests readiness en their part to reconsider their earlier opposition to the spreadove,r arrangement, which adversely affected wages.
