Jack Haines Badly Injured at

Sydney Stadium.

PALMER WINS TITLE,

(United P.A.-Electric Telegraph—Copyright)

(Received 12 noon.\

SYDNEY, this day,

At the Sydney Stadium'on Saturday evening, the middle-weight boxing championship of Australia changed hands when Jack Haines, list 41b, collapsed in the 12th round after a terrific battering from Ambrose' Palmer (Victoria) list sJlb.

Haines was later admitted to St. Vincent's Hospital in a serious condition. He suffered a rupture of a blood vessel beneath the skull. • His condition is very low, but he has improved slightly since admission.

The contest was most sensational. There were 14,000 spectators present. Palmer was the master throughout. His terrific rips to the body and staggering hooks to Haines* jaw had the champion hanging on almost every round.

Palmer forced the fig-.t from beginning to end. Haines several times unsuccessfully appealed for a foul. The climax came in the 12th round, when Haines went down three times. Finally he fell to the canvas with a thud. This is the first time he has ever been knocked out. , , V"\--.V:,...

This was the third match between the pair. In the first match, in which the title was not involved, Palmer won and the second was a draw.

A later message states that Haines, though improved is still not out of danger. The report that lie had been operated on> is incorrect. He was' placed on an operating table, but for some unknown reason the operation was postponed. The ex-champion stated: "I shall come back with the gloves on again." Trainer Dunleavy, however, said that Haines would never enter the ring again. The new title-holder is upset over his opponent's illness. ' His father said: "It happens it was my boy's thirteenth professional bout, and tlio fact that he was responsible for two others going to the hospital after previous bouts is playing on his nerves."
