SECESSION MOVE.
CANADIAN FARMERS' SCHEME, > " ■'
OTTAWA, December 25,
A "co-operative Commonwealth," separate from Canada, trading with Great Britain on a barter basis of . free trade, has been adopted in a "Charter of Liberty," drawn up by farmers at Wilkie, in Saskatchewan.
The charter included demands that wheat be pegged at a dollar (4/2) a bushel; that foreclosures be halted; and that prices of manufactured goods be reduced. The secessionists propose that the Commonwealth include Manitoba and Alberta, with a seaport at Churchill, on Hudson Bay.
Unquestionably the- prairies are suffering great economic difficulty, and some radical elements are. pushing Communistic theories, especially in isolated places.
The result of the meeting of farmers at Wilkie is that Mr. Gideon Robertson, the Minister of Labour, has issued an .appeal to good Canadians to do their bit in/helping to restore equilibrium during the stress of depression.
