The "Pilgrimage of Grace" was an insurrection which arose in the north of England with the object of opposing the dissolution of the monasteries. TJie movement, commenced in Lincolnshire in September, 1530, was suppressed in October, but was soon after revived in Yorkshire. It was headed by-Aske and other gentlemen,'and joined by priests and 40,000 men, chiefly of York, Durham and Lancashire. They took Hull and York, with smaller towns. The Duke of Norfolk marched against them, I and, by making terms, dispersed them. I Early in. 1537 they again took the J field, but they were promptly suppressed, and the leaders, among whom were ! several abbots, were executed. , A ship with eails furled was the ancient arms of the Isle of Man, and it continued till the time of the Scottish conquest, when the three legs, conjoined at the upper part of the thighs, 1 were substituted. Each knee is bent ' ixs if performing a genuflection. This is supposed to refer to the position of the island.'with respect to England, Scotland and Ireland, when each was a separate kingdom, as in whatever position the insignia are placed, one only of the legs can assume the attitude of kneeling. . Another explanation of the peeui liar device is that it is merely symbolical of the three-cornered shape of the Isle of Man.
