GOOD VALUE FOR CHILDREN.

" Fortunate will be the child who gets for a Christmas present "The Children's Play-Hour Book." edited by Stephen Southwold and published by Longmans, Green, and Company. Here are poems and stories.by well-known authors, and excellent illustrations in black and white and colour. Henry Williamson, Sir Henry Newbolt, John Drinkwater, Walter de la Mare, Rose Fyleman, Marion St. John Webb, Eleanor Farjeon, John Galsworthy, and H. G. Wells are among the contributors. . Mr. Wells' item is one of his most delightful short stories, "The- Magic Shop," which, illustrated as it is in colour, would give special value to any collection. If young readers get tired of the imaginative fare, they can turn to "The Eoma'nce of an Airport," or "The Gaines French Children Play." And at the end there is thoughtfully, provided a reading list for various ages, the most interesting feature of which is the selection from living writers. What would our grandmothers have thought of "The Fc-syte Saga" for children of fourteen to sixteen? Our own impression—and we are warm admirers of Mr. Galsworthy—is that they would be happier with the tales of Dumas; Scott, Kipling, and Rider Haggard that are here included. This is a very charming book.
