PAPAKURA TO MERCER STRETCH.

ENGINEERS' CONFERENCE.

Following the visit. to Pukekohe .of the Main Highways Board to discuss the surfacing of the Franklin county portion of the Great South Road from Pa-pakura to Mercer, officers of the Main Highways Board and the county engineer , have conferred. lleportip" *"• the Franklin' County Council yesterday, Mr, J. F. McArthur said the proposal put forward now by the board, to cost £103,000, provided for a concrete road with necessary bridges between Papakura and intersection with the Drury-Waiuku main highway, a distance of 121 chains. His original proposals, including alignment and other. details, at an estimated cost of £37,083, were accepted for this section. From the turn-off at Drury.to the Bombay Hills deviation, a distance of nearly five miles, the board's estimate provided for a penetrated bituminous road without alteration to alignment of the present road with the exception of Wright's deviation; also it was proposed to make uee of the present road eur-, face, for a foundation. No provision was made for reconstruction of a bridge north of the railway overhead bridge at Pokeno. A detailed report would be avilable for the January meeting, containing definite proposals for the section, Drury to Mercer.
