SCHOOL SUBSIDIES.

DEPARTMENTAL ECONOMIES

Owing to lack of funds, the Education Department can approve of no further subsidies during the current year in regard to voluntary contributions. This fact was mentioned at this morning's meeting of the Auckland Education Board, Mr. A. Burns presiding, when the Department advised that the Treasury intimated that the amount allocated for subsidies had been exhausted, ami that no.further payments could be made till March 31 'next. Regret was expressed by the Depart- , ment that it was unable at present to pay £33 7/9 to the Mount Albert School on account of a subsidy authorised for ground improvements. It was also pointed out that, owing to the need for the strictest economy, it had been decided that meantime grants for hot water heating systems could not be considered in cases where there were already open fireplaces in schools.
