DEVONPORT SEEKS SUBSIDY.
£600 FOR ADDITIONAL WORK.
APPEAL TO ASSOCIATIONS.
The Queen's Parade proposal having been rejected by the Minister of Defence, the Devonport Borough Council has decided to put other work in hand immediately for the relief of unemployment in the borough. Application for a subsidv was made to the Unemployment Board last night, and if this is approved a turn of £600 will be available. •'The borough of Devonport has not been behind in the past in finding money for the relief of unemployment/ said Mr. J. Hislop, the acting-Mayor, this morning. "No less a sum than has been raised by the_ borough trom time to time for this object. Isow turther work is to be put in hand lmmediatelv and with the Government subsidy this" will mean a further expenditure ot £600. "Any further help which we can get would enable the council to do more, and X would appeal at this time to tne various associations in the to rise to the occasion and see if this sum cannot be augmented. For instance, I am <nven to understand that the Devonport Property Holders' Association have in hand the sum of £100, and if they would allow this money to be used, along with the £200 subsidy which would be received from the Unemployment Board, it would mean further Christmas cheer and happiness to many homes in the borough, at the same time benefiting the borough itself. If I judge the members of the association aright, I feel sure I .have only to mention this matter and they will seize the opportunity of rendering this further relief."
