CABINET TO DECIDE.
COUPONS AND CERTIFICATES. ASSURANCE BY MINISTER. IMMEDIATE CONSIDERATION. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. Another protest against the issue of coupons and certificates for prizes was made to the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. P. A. de la Perrelle, to-day by representatives of the Associated Chambers of Commerce, the Dominion Grocers' Association, the Watchmakers and Jewellers' Association, the Employers' Federation, the Wholesale Warehouses' Association, the Wellington Retailers' Association, and other commercial associations.
A sympathetic reply was given by the Minister, who promised to place the whole matter before Cabinet immediately. He said he realised the seriousness of the position. If it was at all possible, the matter would be dealt with by Order-in-Council, but if that was not possible, they would have to wait till next session. According to the Crown Lrt-w Office, i»ie present Act was worthless. It seemed to him that universal coupons were particularly dangerous to business. A Voice: So are tobacco coupons. Mr. F. Campbell: I know the tobacco people are tired of it. Another member of the deputation said in the case of one brand of cigarettes which did not issue certificates the effect had been disastrous. He quoted one large firm, which had previously sold 50,000 of this brand in a fortnight, but which now sold only 1300. Mr. Perrelle said they would realise that it might take some little time to put regulations in force. t They would have to give people the opportunity of redeeming their coupons, but the matter would he placed under consideration immediately.
