TWO STUDENTS SELECTED. AUCKLAND AND OTAGO MEN. ""SIR. J. S: WATT SUCCESSFUL. (By Telegraph'.—Own Correspondent.) . WELLINGTON, Wednesday. The committee to select the ' Rhodes Scholars for" 1931 \ met at Government House to-day, and announced, at the conclusion of the meeting, that the scholars selected were:— John Edward Lovelock, Otago Unii • versity.' Mr. Watt is 22 years of. ago, and was ■born at Boulder, West Australia. He cattie to the Dominion in 1913, and from 1914 to 1920 attended the Remuera District School. During the next five years jio attended the Auckland Grammar School, and for the past four years had been a student at the Auckland University. From 1928 until the present time he has been a lecture demonstrator in the chemistry department at the college. In 1923 lie won a- senior national sdiolarchi'jj, and iii 192G he gained a university entrance scholarship. He seem ed the Sir George Grey Scholarship. this year, and also took the Degree of Bachelor of Science. During his term at the Auckland he has studied mathematics and chemistry, and lust year he was lirst for New Zealand in' two of the chemistry papers. His athletic career has been an excellent cue, and he has broken several records on the track, both at the Auckland • Grammar School and the Auckland University. In the 1927-28 season he was provincial bBU vards and SOO metres champion, _ and represented "Auckland at. the Dominion champioiisliips, bfesides being of the champion relay team of .New Zealand. During the past season he was a o ain provincial 880 yards champion. e I,'iU a!-o played football and taken part in school cricket, tennis, and■■swimming. During his university career Mr.- Watt has held . important' positions, iji the. athletic dub and .scientific' society of .the um-
versity.. He intends to pursue further his research work in organic chemistry. Mr. Lovelock. ■, Mr. Lovelock was horn on the West Coast, on January -5, 1910, ; and received his early schooling. at-Temuka and Fairlie, being Dux : of "the Fairlie School in 1922; For a year he was a pupil at the Fairlie District High School, and from 1924 to 1928 he was at the Tiniaru Boys' High School. He matriculated in 1925. 11l 1922 1 he gained a Junior National Scholarship, and-in. 1925 gained a Senior National Scholarship. • The following year lie qualified for.a Higher Leaving Certificate. In 1928 he was Dux of the school, and won- a University National Scholarship. During 1929-30 lie studied medicine at Otago University. In 1929 he passed all sections of filial Intermediate Examination. As. far as sport is concerned-,' liie represented his scliool at football in his boj'liood days, and when ■ at the Tiniaru Boys' High School'took, an active, part iii footbali, cricket', athletics, boxing, tennis, swimming, fives .and gymnastics. In 1924 he broke the junior record for the half-mile. In 1926 he' was the holder of three senior athletic championships and broke the senior record for the half-mile. In 1928 he won the boxing championship, and was awarded a;medal for being the most scientific boxer. same year he held four senior athletic championships, and broke three senior athletic records—quarter,, half,, and one, mile. Last year he won the.Otago University mile championship, and was runner-up for the Otago* provincial championship. He won the provincial championship this year. He has,always taken.a keen inter. «it in the administrative side of school and university life. He intends to study medicine at Oxford.
