SHOPLIFTER CAUGHT.
"MAKINGLA BUSINESS OF IT." LARGE INSIDE POCKET SEWN IN ".DRESS. WOMAN SENT TO PRISON. In sentencing a woman, aged 50, to one month's imprisonment on shoplifting charges, Mr. vF.' K. Hunt, S.M., remarked at the Police Court this morning that accused was making a- business of shoplifting. • Accused was Marv Smith, described as a dressmaker. She pleaded guilty to three charges of stealing, various articles of a total value of 19/2 011 November 21, December 2 and 3, from a large city store. Detective-Sergeant Kelly said Detective Snedden went to the store yesterday afternoon and found accused in the pffice. She admitted stealing the articles. She said she had no money, but 011 being searched at the police station the sum of £5 3/-10 was found on her. She was a divorced woman and had once previously been before the court, when she was fined £40 for carrying on the business of a bookmaker. "She had a leather bag with-her and also this," said Mr. Kelly, holding up a black frock for the magistrate's inspection. • • Tlie frock contained a large inside pocket, fitted with wooden handles. "Just the. thing for a shoplifter/' said Mr. Hunt.
.."I never had it-at all." said the woman. "The £0 found on me I had received from my brother in Tasmania to help pay my fare across there.'" Mr. Hunt: You admit "stealing 011 three different occasions from the stores, and you are fc;md with a dress with a secret pocket. You evidently made a business of shoplifting. One month's imprisonment." '
