The Registrar-General's quarterly return shows a slightly higher birth rate and a lower death rate for the British Isles than .in the corresponding quarter of last year. The most striking figure is that of ■ Infant mortality, the rate of which was 45 per 1000 in the period. This is 14 per 1000 below the average of the 10 preceding quarters and is the lowest ever recorded.
