BOWLING.

SOUTH AUCKLAND WINS. THE HARDUBY SHIELD. NOTES OX THE MEETING. (By TRUNDLER.) The Ponsonby green was very gay all dav yesterday, on the occasion of the annual visit of teams from the South Auckland Centre, for the function attracted a large number of spectators, in addition to the actual competitors. Nobody could complain about the local selection this. time, for the Auckland players were thoroughly representative of "all the city and suburban clubs. The real surprise about the selection was the large number who did not attend, although ti,e names were published last ■week. Several' were unavoidably abse'nt, and send word in good time for the selected emergencies to take their place, but great inconvenience was occasioned by those who sent no intimation whatever, and whose places had to be filled at the last moment by players who had merely gone to the green to look on. One may hazard a guess that these will not receive much consideration from the selectors next time a representative team is wanted. With this exception everything went off very nicely, even the little misty showers , only delaying the play for a few minutes. The speeches were all in good part, and the donor of the shield that goes to the winners, Mr. J. W. Hardley, seemed quite delighted to be a'ble to tell the visitors that they had won it for the first time. The morning round ■was published yesterday, Auckland winning by four rinks and a tie, out of the eight rinks played, but in the afternoon South Auckland effectively turned the tables on the local players, winning by five rinks to three. This gave them a win on the day's play by one rink, so they will hold the shield till the return match is played on some green in South Auckland during the autumn and the shield will then be held for a year by the centre winning the greatest number of games on the two days combined. The scores will be found in another column, but it should be noted that at one stage of the afternoon's play, just a little after the tea adjournment, South Auckland were leading on every rink except one, that of Parsons v. Clarke. Probably the closest 'game was Walker V. North, for they tied, no less than five times. Just the opposite was the game between Layland and Stewart, for the former led by 11 to 2 on the eighth head, and then made only five more points on the remaining 17 heads, while the Mata- 1 mata rink made 31, to win by 33 to 16. Paterson had rather an easy win against Ball, although the latter managed to work off rather a heavy overdraft in the last few heads. Pilkington made ut> for his small deficit in the morning by establishing a great lead against Lamb, and retaining it to the end. Adamson, the well-known Thames skip, had the honour of heading the only rink to get two wins, and each time the game was very close. In the morning it looked as if he was down, for Hopwood was lying on the jack when the skips went up, after a tie on the 24th. head. Adamson played a perfect rest with his first bowl on the forehand, and then got a second on the backhand, to win by 22 to 20, whereas a strong gust at the windy end of the green-caught each of Kerr's bowls and made them hold up straight, about 18in too wide to save.

It was not. for want, of trying that Paterson went down to Irving Clarke in the morning, for he burned the last head three times, to improve the- aggregate score, but as all the others had finished he did not make a fourth attempt to work off a deficit of 13 points. Robertson apparently also-had an ey©t on the aggregate score, for he burned, the last head when Pilkington was lying four, although he still stood to win by one point. On the replay Pilkington got two, instead of four, so Robertson won by three* An appropriate reminder was given yesterday by the Dominion president, Mr. James Pascoe, that he hoped a good many of the- South Auckland bowlers would enter for the Dominion tournament, to commence on -Januai'y 12, and that the entries close on Saturday. The following additional local rinks will enter: A. Brackebush, F. H. Kummer, C. Muston, M. Walker (Auckland); J. Veale, E. Farrow, J. Torrance, E. Jury (Ponsonby) ;-S. Clark, A. B. Blank, J.
