CHRISTMAS APPEALS.

SALVATION ARMY'S PLEA. It .is almost unnecessary to remind readers of the "Star" that Christmas will be with .us in a very short time from now, write Brigadier Cottrill, of the Salvation Army. This season of peace, happiness and good will provides a fitting opportunity for all generous hearted people to respond to thecalls made to assist those who, through various causes, are in real want. Daily contact with .the poorest of .the poor throughout a trying winter has made us painfully conscious of the fact that a tremendous amount of distress is existing. Major _ Gordon is full of the deepest; appreciation' to every friend and well wisher who' has so readily given in the past. May I say in conclusion that gifts of money or kind, in order to bring cheer this Christmastide, will be gratefully received by Major Gordon, 6, Welleslejr Chambers, Auckland.

MANUREWA CHILDREN'S HOME

May we put before your 'largo body of readers our annual appeal for Christmas, cheer for our 70 children, writes Mr. T. E. Whitton, on behalf of the ManurewaChildren's Home. The Auckland public; .have responded so liberally in' years gone by that we are emboldened to come ■ before it again, our only plea being that we may add some special cheer during the festive season to brighten the lives and add to the happiness of these little ones. This can be done only by special funds provided for the purpose, since our general fund—in ' common with other benevolent institutions—is feeling the stringency of the present difficult times. Assuring your readers that any amounts entrusted to us will be expended to the best advantage, and wishing for them mitt you that which we are endeavouring to give the children, "A happy Christmas and a bright and prosperous New Year."'
