Oscar Garden, the young New Zealand airman who left England on -October 17 ? has succeeded in flying to Australia in 19.days. He arrived afc Binia on Monday afternoon and left yesterday for Kupang, Timor Island. . . The airman reached Kupang at 10 a.m., fcnd hopped off for Wyndham at 11.15 ».m., reaching his destination at 5 p.m. Mr: Garden, who reached Australia unheralded and unsung, is a member of p,- Scottish family who settled in New Zealand after the Great War.
The aviator •will probably attempt a flight across the Tasman soon. No one ■was present to meet him when he landed three miles from Wyndham. The previous night 3io' had camped ■with the blacks at Bima. Mr. Garden's achievement is regarded as most noteworthy for one -with such a comparatively small knowledge of aviation and long-distance flying. Mr. Garden's progress on his flight was las follows: — October 17—Left Lympne. October 22—Arrived Bagdad. October 23—Arrived Bushire. October 24—Arrived J ask. October 28—Arrived Calcutta. October 30—Arrived Rangoon. October 31 —Arrived Bangkok. November I—Arrived1 —Arrived Singapore. November 2—Arrived Batavia. November 3—Arrived Sourabaya and Bima. November 4—Arrived Kupang and .Wyndham. 1 When Mr. Garden arrived at Calcutta lie said: "I must have been born lucky/' The remark was occasioned by ; his narrow escape from serious injury when his aeroplane capsized in a paddy field near Jhansi. The machine turned completely . over,, damaging both wings and tail. Rain had been falling for five hours, .and the machine was nearly covered. Coolies were persuaded to • drag the jnachine with a rope for two miles to a ■ dry patch, where Garden repaired the machine himself.
