GALLOPS AT AWAPUNI. HORSES FOR RICCARTON". (•Special to " Star.") PALMERSTON NORTH, Tuesday. There was very little fast work at AAvapuni yesterday morning, most of tho horses being restricted to pace work. The .course proper was available, the flags being Avell out from the rails. The going was a trifle heavy. The NeAV Zealand Cup candidate Merry Damon, Avith H. Wiggins up, Avaa responsible for a very fine gallop over a mile, cutting "the distance out in 1.45. WalJbank hopped off with Merry Damon and set the pace for the cup horse for the first three furlongs, Avhere Merry Melody took up Wallaruh's task. Merry Damon and Merry Melody Avere together at the entrance to the straight, but Merry Damon finished very strongly ana was well clear at the post. Courageous was galloped before breakfast. In company with Shortly, he moved very freely over seven furlongs. They were together at. the post,, Courageous finishing very strongly. It Avas a good gallop. Coon Song Avas given useful pace wo;k on the plough. H. Wiggins will ride Palm in the New Zealand Cup, La Poupee, Paratoo (Sorino- Plate), King Musket, Gesture and Dolomite. Evening Hero, Ladykiller and Lady Alophen sprinted home from the threefurlong peg. Evening Hero is building up again after the recent operation to his throat, Avhich seems to have been successful. Jean Ladosio, with C. France in the saddle, Avas sent along over three furlongs. She was not pushed over the first furlong to run the distance in 4?s, the last tAvo furlongs taking 275. Merry Damon goes South to-night. Geo. New will leave to-morrow ana return on Saturday night. 'T. Ctreen will ride Courtesy, Merry Damon, Monarchy and Glenrossie on the first day at Riccarton.
