HIRE PURCHASE.

REGISTRATION OF AGREEMENTS.

SUPPORT FOR PROPOSAL,

"It is a pity that a perfectly sound and economic system should be discredited by the abuse that has developed in the past few years," said Mr. L. A. Eady at a meeting of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, when that body was asked to define its attitude toward the Chattels Transfer Act, 1924. Remits to be presented to the forthcoming conference of the Associated Chambers of Commerce suggest that it should be made compulsory to register all hire-purchase agreements, and that the Government should be urged to introduce legislation to abolish the hirepurchase or conditional-purchase systems. After considerable discussion the chamber's delegates to the conference were instructed to support the compulsory registration of hire-purchase agreements of° £1 or over, but to oppose the suggested abolition of the system.
