ARETHUSA BRILLIANT.

SISTER TO WRACKLER. ME. H. F. NIGOLL'S SUCCESSES. '(■By. Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) CHEIST'CHURCH, Monday. Mr. H. F. Nicoll,'president of the New Zealand Trotting Conference, arrived from England 011 Saturday morning. He was present at the Jlcthven Trotting Club's meeting, where he saw his three-year-old fillies Flying Cloud and Arethusa wiu races. Arethusa did not start favourite for the Alethven Cup, but she won very decisively. The brilliant three-year-old filly, who has not yet been defeated, having four wins to her credit, was very well handled by '31. Holmes. She got a good position and was not asked'to do her best'till well in the straight when she came right away, and soon put the race beyond doubt. She is' by Wrack frorii Trix Pointer, and i* a sister to Wrackler,.a good stake earner last season and engaged in this years Xew. Zealand Cup. Arcthusa did not look - bright, but she is a light ileshed young pacer. There is no question about • her speed or stamina, and she will set tHeother three-year-olds a still task in the classic races this season. Flying Cloud • won the Westward Ho Handicap in line style. Mr. Nicoll looks as though he got a very promising three-year-old in the Wrack—Pearlchild filly. She was a hot .favourite for the race, and driven hy M. Holmes, she came 011 at the finish and soon settled the opposition. She has done very little racing, and should shpw considerable improvement this season.

; Checkers, who won tlio Avorimore Baincliea]-), is a three-year-old by Worthy Fancy Pointer, and is trained tyl; B. Berry. Checkers won easily, audit is hard to understand why lie was Wit better supported. Lonziu, who was making his frstjsappearancc in n race, was second favoiirite for the Drayton Handicap. .'■The .three-year-old did not settle down to.his -work early, and lost a lot of ground. Once he" got properly into his gait he showed a lot of speed, eventually finishing third. The young trotter struck himself rather badly during the ra ce, and he may require a spell. Ability, who won the Drayton Handi!*P, is h. brother to the well performed B «iny Logan. His dam Bonilene raced a « a -trotter, and Ability also favours Wgait. Hβ is owned by Jliss Norton ■od % W: Franks, and "is trained by »»e £ockburn mentor, who drove him. fWljfy is a six-year-old, but he has ttpnefVcry iittln racing, as he has met '*ith several mishaps during his educa"Oβ■ -and early training.
