POPULAR PUZZLES.

SUCCESS OF NEW FEATURE. ANOTHER BIG ENTRY RECEIVED.

The success of any newspaper competition can be judged by one infallible test—the response of the public. In the case of the "Star" picture puzzle feature the answer has been a very definite affirmative, for every mail brings a fresh batch of replies. Once again the 600 mark has been topped, and answers have been received from all parts of the North'lsland. The lady was placing a sheet of typing paper in her machine. She was holdinsr the paper in her left hand and turning the roller of the typewriter with her right. The best of 23 correct answers came from MR. H. BALDWIN, 6, Te Whare Flate, Point Chevalier. Solutions, in order of popular choice, were driving a molov car, playing a violin, holding a baby, preparing to servo at tennis, and riding on the pillion seat of a motor cycle. Once again there was a large entry from children. Incidentally it may be mentioned that Miss Eileen Mayliill, winner of the last competition, is only eight years of age. She is a grand-daughter of the veteran Captain W. Ross, of Remuera. The latest of the series is by no means the simplest. What is_ the lady doing?

WHAT IS SHE DOING? " ..'- prize of ten shillings will be offered to the reader who supplies the correct answer! Should no solver 'be right, then the prize will go to the one who most closely approximates to the true answer. If more than one reader supplies the correct solution,, then the prize will go to the one which most adequately describes the surrounding details, such as the material used, the age of the individual, and so on. No prize in the series will be withheld, two competitions will be held each week, and each week two prizes will be paid out. Post your solutions, on the coupon below, addressed "Picture Puzzle, 'Star' Office, Auckland." Watch for next Friday's paper, when the doubts of solvers will be resolved, and when a new problem will be offered upon which to ponder for a day or two. -
