LOSS PER MILE.

HALLWAY BRANCH 'LINES. FIGURES FOE W ZEALAND. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, this day. Illuminative figures showing the average loss per mile on branch lines in the various railway districts in the Dominion were quoted by Mr. D. J. Wesney, president of the Invercargill Chamber of Commerce, in commenting on the recommendations of the Railway Commission. The figures, which are from the Department's oWn returns for the year ended March 31, 1930, show that the average loss per mile on developmental branch lines in the respective districts were as follow: —Auckland, £1295; Poverty Bay, £758; Taranaki, £910; Hawke's Bay, £522; Wairarapa, £618; Nelson-Marlborough, £646; Canterbury, £340; West Coast, £642; Ota go, £536; Southland, £353.

The average loss per mile was £1093 in the North Island and £465 in the South Island.
