WAIHOU RIVER IMPROVEMENT
SCHEME NEAR COMPLETION. CONTROL BOARD PROPOSED. (From Our Own Correspondent.) ThImES, Sunday. Owing to the rapidly-approaching completion of the Waihou River improvement works, the question of finance is exercising thd minds of the Public Works officials. Estimated in 1910 to cost £150,000, the scheme, when completed, Will have cost about £700,000. The Minister of Public Works, the Hon. W. B. Taverner, has sent the department's proposals to the Thames County Council, which will discuss them at its next meeting, on the jiinth inst. It is proposed that a Rivers Board be set up, consisting of six members, tbree appointed by the Government, of whom one shall be chairman with a casting vote, and three elected ]jjr the ratepayers'in the rivers district; and that the lands in the district receivjug benefit shall be rated on the capital valuation basis. The proposals will be put in' the form of an amending bill po go before Parliament.
