ORDERED TO MAINTAIN WIFE. SALESMAN'S ABSENCES FROM HOME. WIFE LEFT DESTITUTE. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) HAMILTON, tins day. Declaring that the husband seemed to be excessively voluble, Mr. Wyvcrn Wilson, S.M., to-day ordered the man to maintain his wife. Tho applicant was a young married woman named Marian Lynda Wakefield, who proceeded against her husband, John Thomas Wakefield, a salesman. She said they were married in 1925. Three weeks before the kst baby was boni her husband left her destitute, and she had to appeal to the police to get him to return. He had 1-eft her for various periods since, and all she received from him was a few. shillings occasionally. She left Hamilton owing a month's rent and had to leave a house at Ngaruawahia for a similar reason. The husband put the wife through a stiff cross-examination as to her habits. She denied that she was addicted to drink or that she associated with other men. Defendant declared that his wife's drinking habits and her fondness for other men broke tip the home. He was, he said, doing his best to get on, and had sent his wife about £1 18/ a week. A letter was put in, having been written by defendant to his wife a few days ago. In this he remarked that wjiile he had his health and strength and could use his sales ability and retain his .winning way and happy smile he was positive he would become a success. His Worship said the husband was sent for once before by the wife. The letter seemed a bit of a fraud, and the man appeared to be a bit of a voluble fraud himself. So long as lie, was comfortable himself he did not want to be bothered with his wife. An order for £2 per week maintenance was made.
