Local body superannuation schemes were the subject of an urgent question by Mr. M. J. Savage (Auckland West) in the House of Representatives this afternoon. Mr. Savage asked the acting-Prime Minister to include in the Finance Bill this session a clause giving general powers to all local bodies, including electric power boards, to establish or contribute to any scheme to provide for payment to officers and servants of such local bodies or their dependants of gratuities, retirii/g allowance and other such grants, and bonus funds to provide for the payment of 'bonuses, gratuities and other life payments to officers and servants or any association of them. The member pointed out that section 55 of the Auckland Transport .Board Act, 1925, gave similar powers to the Auckland Transport Board, a:id a scheme, inaugurated by the Government Life Insurance Department, was already in operation, and covered portion of the board's staff. There was a general desire 011 the part of local bodies that those powers should have universal application.
