The debate on the Railway Statement was continued until 11.45, and tie remaining Quarter of an hour was devoted to the consideration of the Estimates, on which progress had to be reported. Mr. 'H. ~ E. Holland, Leader of tie Labour party, moved a redaction of £10 in the vote, to indicate disapproval of the policy of the Minister of Railways in continuing the dismissals of railway employees, "in contravention of iis own promises, publicly made, and in violation of the"Prime Ministers undertaking tiat no further dismissals would take place dining his absence from New Zealand: and further, to indicate disapproval of the Ministers action in so abnormally reducing coal orders to various mines* as to seriously dislocate the coal mining industry." On a division, the amendment was lost bv 40 votes to 24, Messrs. W. P. Endean (Parnell), A W. Hall (Hauraki), A. M. Samuel (Thames), E. A. Wright (Wellington Suburbs), J. A Young (Hamilton), all Reform members, and Mr. J. S. ITetcher (Independent, Grey Lynn), voted with Labour.
