TROTTING.

WHEEL AND TRACK NOTES.

SEASON'S FIXTURES.

(By ORION.)

October 4—Meturen T.C. October 11—Waikato T.C. October IS —Northland T.C. October 25, 27—Greyinouth T.C. October 20, 27—Auckland T.C. October 27—Oamaru T.C. Tie Auckland Trotting Club committee at the meeting this week decided to sell about 120 acres of the property recently taken orer from the Otahuhu Club at Mangere. Pavlova is doing regular work and the black mare will be suited by the classes. She has not yet registered fast time and is ni-ely placed- in the handicaps to secure a race. She is best over shoit courses. The programmes for meetings to be held by the Auckland Trotting Club this season have been drawn up by the committee and forwarded to the New Zealand Trotting Association for approval. The association meets oil October 3. Nathaniel will require sharpening up before he is .ready to 'pfoduce his best form. • The sou of Our Thorpe ran more than one good race last season without winning, and at the Waikato fixture in April finished second in the Farewell Handicap, going 2.51 2-5, which works out at a 2.17 gait. ;

G. Phipps is toot a very busy man these days, and is confining most of his attention to getting Billy Carbine tuned up. He is a useful trotter in his class, but on his present handicap is not a betting proposition. - It'is some time since Phipps won a race, but like all other trainers he finds it hard to get the money with poor horses. V. ... Mr. G. Paul will issue the handicaps for the spring meeting of., the Auckland Trotting Club. It will be remembered that the appointment of handicapper for the A.T.C. was made a meeiing-to-meet-ing one. The unemployment relief meeting did not count, as Mr. Paul did the work of handicapping for that fixture without payment. The weather conditions this week have not been at all favourable for training operations at Alexandra Parkland little other than jogging work has been accomplished. The approaching Waikato meeting will attract much attention from owners, and should nest week be fine there will „be some interesting work registered on the training tracks.

- So far Stonev has been a failure since he came across* from Sydney. The grey gelding wants a hard track to show his best speed, and even then he is not a solid pacer, although he put up one fair performance last season when he finished third in the Richmond Handicap at the February meeting of the Otahuhu Club and went 4.31 1-5. A repetition of that effort would see him in the money. *

Warplane 1 is very well and the black son of Man-o'-War only wants a firm track to show how.fast he really can go over a short journey. He has gone two miles in 431, and a mile and a quarter in 2.46 2-5, but since then has won off a 2.46 handicap. " He began the season well by winning twice at Addington last month, and already has £400 in stake money to his credit This amount should be augmented before long.

The El Carbine gelding Zanzibar has only £o train o'n right to win a slowclass trot early. The gelding went two fine races at the unemployed relief'meeting, and -with a bit of luck in running in the straight, might have won instead of finishing third. As the time was slow, owing to the heavy track, it is unlikely Zanzibar will suffer any penalty. He will be a tough proposition to beat at the Waikato meeting "next month.

W. Brain is putting in a lot of time with Nelson Tasker and Haroto. At his best Nelson Tasker is very speedy, but up to the present he has not been good at tw<f miles, although he has 4,29 1-5 against him. This ,he registered. in November of last year, when he won the Fergusson Handicap on the second day of the Otahuhu meeting. Over a journey of a mile and a quarter he can go very fast. Haroto does not look a good proposition. The son of Normintson wem a race in October of last year at Alexandra Park, but since then his form has not been impressive.

COST TO OWNERS.

In letters which hare been written by owners and which appeared iu these ' columns recently, the opinion has been * expressed that the charges made in the dotting sport in Auckland for nominations and acceptances are too high. Comparisons lave been drawn with the charges made at meetings of the Auckland Racing Club, but it must be remembered that the all-round support given to galloping in Auckland is greater than ie accorded trotting.

It may not be generally known among owners that under the rules of trotting clubs are permitted to charge for nominations and acceptances combined, up to 5 per cent of the stake. This is not taken, full advantage of because it is recognised that to charge the limit allowed would be making the sport very expensive. The Auckland Trotting Club when its programmes are studied, treat owners rather well, and a perusal of the programme for the spring meeting next month 6hows that the maximum charge upon'owners is If per cent, and this is only applied in respect to the slowest class races. For the big handicaps/ worth £600, the cost of nomination and acceptance is 1 l-6th per cent, or £7, while in the middle class events the cost is 1 3-sth per cent of the stake.
