CLUB AND INTER-CLUB.

HAMILTON PLAYERS' VISIT.

PROGRESS OF CHAMPIONSHIPS.

(By "RUBBERCORE.")

Interest was stimulated locally during the week-end by the number of interclub matches played. The Hamilton Club was afield, to try conclusions with both Middlemo/e.and Titirangi. Though in each instance the visitors suffered a reverse, the games were enjoyed by all. After the delightfully fast conditions at St. Andrews, the Hamilton members were no doubt much away with conditions in the opening encounter at Middlemore. Particularly" would this be noticeable round the greens, Middlemore having been heavy; on Saturday. No doubt this can be in some measure applied to Black's defeat by Plumley, though it is to be recognised the latter is now playing the best golf of his career, and - probably the best golf at Middlemore. He, is v'ei'y much .at home with the course in a holding condition. Allied with Ralph, Plumley" nad a dual victory, Wynne being unable'to add the extra strength to defeat the home players. Passing on to Titirangi; Black avenged his setbacks at the expense of T. A. Goulding, but the latter played a

fine round in the afternoon when joined by W. L. Robinson, scoring even fours to the finish of the match, Black and Wynne being unable to keep step. E. D. Wright's defeat by Guy was probably the ieast expected setback for Middlemore, though as.a steady player and , good putter, Guy is. always capable of springing a surprise. It is an old axiom that a good putter is a match for anyone. , Wright's round was, however, in contradiction to his form of last week when lie returned, a fine card .of 2 -up under boisterous conditions. C. Hotson gave Stuart Colbeck a good match which after his 77 of the previous week at St. Andrews was not unexpected. He is of the tenacious kind and we shall hear more of him. yet. Wells continued his good form and was much too strong for Ross' It will be interesting to see how he fares in the match play in the club championship. Blundell, arrested the string of wins accruing'to Middlemore when, he successfully coped with*P. J; Western. Blundell is a fairly able?payer in any company.' Middlemore was. >7itliout the services of M. B. Lusk, who was busy adding to his list of titlesin successfully defending the .Napier championship. As was the casei last year he enjoyed, a certain amount of respite, in the ,final, his opponent, Turnbull, being scarcely up to open championship requirements of to-day. It is, however, pleasing to see Lusk again successful and lie prom-ises-to be as hard as ever.to defeat in the club championship which com meiicss at the week-end. Speculation is fife, and the term is no misnomer, as to who will ,win.' At least the laurels promise to be difficult to gain.

Ballin Cup Matches. . Those members of Titirangi not' participating, either Glendowie or St. Andrews found time to play other matches which have lagged behind. -After, a good game B. E. Beehari defeated V. Humphries in the Ballin Cup, an! now meets I. 8.. Stewart in the final. Boehan •had a field day at Akarana earlier.in the week collecting all the trophies, oi the day. Though he has yet to enjoy a .i win in his own club the handicippars were unable to take .a lenient view of his ofl'ences tso that he now plays from a handicap of nine. His game has progressed wonderfully this season. Amongst the C graders one of the "oldest uiynbera" ,in J. M. Somerville defeated A. A,. Tysoe while in the other semi-final Ganiey beat'.iFinlay by a fairly' comiFortableimargin. In the bogey A. Fairturn, J. M. Hockin and Beehan effected a tie with-two down., The promotion in status of the latter would- seem to have j beeri ' ' '.'..'"

Glendowie y. Titirangi. Glendowie gave Titirangi a spirited competition 'in .the inter-club, the teams chosen hairing'been remarkably even in strength.' : PutJ;ing down -two or •three 20ft-pivtts,Roy Kissling quickly caused R. ■ McCrystal's early lead to fade, arid, playing;.good golf throughput, scored,, a win.?'- T^;'Gouldirig "had all.-ie could do to win from C. Allcott. Allcbtt invariably, plays well at Titirangi, appearing to be very much "at home on 'the " greens. Thoinas - and Woods, two sturdy match payers, won theijr games for the visitors, while«Riehardson played/well to.sqiiare with-Jl. L. Wilson. E. Hutchison -also disposeid 'of a good performer dn IA. B. Robinson, Avho; though he hasbburt r little golf, has; generally played well. "Hutchison is hitting through- : his shots nicely c;ul is a A'lery reliable player. Otto Wolf.gram refused to incur defeat, winning a; hard fought match from T. Goiildie afc the last hole. A promising Titirangi junior in S. T. Gaskin, won his game by a wide margin, and seems destined for Senior honours next season.

I Club Championships. Aj new champion has been found at Te where J. Saunders defeated E. Harrison after an interesting match; On,r the general run of play, however, Haundcrs was superior. F. Hetet won the', junior honours, having comfortably defeated B. J. Drake in the final.

By defeating Levy 4 up and 3 to play over 36 holes, Oroxson won the Favona championship ior the third successive year, and the fourth time. As last-year's champion of champions he has the opportunity to repeat'his success. The final w&'fi well contested, Leyy-.winning: the i\vo two holes, but Croxson arrested matters with a timely putt for a 4 and ii UM afc the third. He gradually made HpftlM) leeway, and at the end of the fw%% eighteen holes was 2 up." He was drtytng ft g»"eat ball, which was no small in .his success. Levy, vwho struck excellent form during the past month, hae been runner-up on three occasions. junior final was close throughout, Logan being dormy one. At the last hole Heather had a good chance of tiiking t!ie match to the nineteenth, but ic'iliircd three putts at the critical'stage.'

Mile:. Tliompson's win over Mackenzie and Minogue's .defeat of Goldwater creates an interesting final at Pupuke. Without detracting from Thompson's win it is doubtful if Mackenzie's golf is so good as formerly, though it is to be recognised Thompson's game is vastly improved. Goldwater gave Minogue a close game, and it is fitting that both semi-finals should have proceeded to the full round. The final promises to he one of the best seen at Pupuke. A new-star has arisen at Cambridge, Alford having soundly defeated Joe Banks. The latter has a, fine record in championships, and won the open championship played at Cambridge in 1922. During a respite fr.om the war he had a most interesting game with Harry Vardon when he fully upheld New Zealand prestige. Last year A. H. Nicoll recaptured his old title of club champion at Cambridge, but this year had to bow to superior play. Nicoll, however, can confidently be expected to be again found trying conclusions next year.
