IN THE WAIKATO.

(From Oui' Own Correspondent.)

HAMILTON, Wednesday,

' The market generally, remains on a par with last week's flotations, with perhaps' the exception of beef, which is showing-an easing tendency. The position regarding sheep, is still the same,, with, very tew other than fats offering. Store, cattle are still the most popular, and this week has seen the. start oi the cattle fairs.. These have proved very interesting to the graziers. A,few- months, ago there was a very strong inquiry for grown steers. However, at this week's sales this order was reversed, and young cattle were much more, in favour. The farmers generally are buying very cautiously; no" doubt the check in the, spring growth, and the early decline in the beef prices are the contributing factors. Dairy cattle are still ■ as keenly sought after as ever, although the season is rapidly advancing. Details are as follow:— • • ; •■' . , • Beef.—Good yardmgs continue at the various centres, and values are showing a slight easing tendency.' Especially was this noticeable at. Frankton sale this week with prime ox. Good quality, cow and heifer sold-at late rates, while plain and second quality were easier. Prime ox has been making up to 40/ per 1001b; prime young cow;and heifer, 39/.to 40/; ordinary cow, 34/ to 36/; plain, 30/ to 32/ per 1001b. Fat Sheep.—The, market for fat sheep' still appears to be over-supplied, and, this fact was very noticeable at Frankton this week. It certainly looks as if the top has been reached this season. Best fat wethers have been, making up to 30/; medium, 28/ to 29/; best fat ewes, 23/G; fat hoggets, 24/; medium, 18/ to 19/6. Store Cattle,—Yearling Jersey heifers, which have shown' a sharp rise during the last couple ,of months, are easily the most popular in the store cattle section. Some remarkably good sales are reported, prices ranging as high as £8. Forward-condition store cows are also keenly, sought afterj, and it is seldom' that cattle of this description, when yarded, fail to reach the owner's reserve. All classes of male cattle are in demand, with, young cattle slightly more popular. ■ Forward-condition steers have been making up to £10 10/; threeyear steers, £8 15/ to £9 10/; two-year steers, £6 15/ to £7 15/; yearlings, good £4 15/ to £6; smaller, £4 to £4 10/; fresh-conditioned cows, £5 10/ to £6 15/; empty cows, £4 10/ to £5 5/; year» ling Jersey heifers, good colours, £6 10/ to £7; medium quality, £5 to £5,10/; Shorthorn heifers, £4 to £410/; small heifers, £3 to £4. •■■;•■'>

Dairy Cattle.—The inquiry for dairy cattle is still as keen, as ever, with very few good quality cow's or heifers offering. However, many purchasers seem prepared to buy whatever they can gef. Best dairy cows are making up to £14; medium, £10 to £12; backward, £8 to £9; best heifers, up to £13; medium; £10 to £11; backward and small, £7 10/ to' £9. Pigs.—The demand for fat. pigs is still limited, and very few are being yarded. Competition is still keen for all classes of. stores and weaners.' Best baconers, £3 to £3 10/; porkers, £210/ to £2 18/; stores, 33/ to 38/;' slips, 26/ to 32/; weaners, '15/ to 25/. -■'■~ - • ■
