"HELLO, SYDNEY!"
WIRELESS TELEPHONE.
INAUGURATION SOON.
EXPERIMENTS SATISFACTORY.
The necessary equipment for the inetallation in New- Zealand of a wireless telephony service, between the dominion and Australia, has been, forwarded to the Government, and preliminary tests have proved successful, said Mr* G. McNantara, secretary of the Eost and Telegraph Department this morning. • ; The. Department at Wellington is carrying out experiments to ascertain the best adjustment of the instrument, anct some improvements are still weeseary. The "balance" of the telephone has yet to be found. Even in the fitist tests, the voices of those speaking from New Zealand could he:recogni&ed by the listeners on the other side of the Tasman, so Mr. McNamar* is sanguine of early success. Ho thinka , that before long tho service will be utilised for commercial purposes. The system to bo' used has been supplied by the order of the Government from the firm of Amalgamated Wireless (N.Z. and Australia, Ltd.), and is similar to that adopted in the LoiulonCommonwealth connection. Tho. voice of the person in Now Zealand was received at the Amalgamated Wireless Station at La Terouse.
To.avoid disturbing echoes, Mr. MeNamara said that the receiving and sending 1 ■ stations wore situated in dif* fevent places in Wellington. The message was sent out from the station on the Tinakori Hill, but replies were received at Point Halswell. The telephone/of the individual speaking, or listening, was the connecting point for tho two, the 'telophone in the hoiuo or the office "being switched through the Departmental exchange.
