WELLINGTON, Wednesday;

The / executive .of the. New, Zealand Obstetrical/Society, at its half-yearly: meeting to-day decided to hand. over £6000, being the surplus of the endowment overland above the £25,000. required; for endowing- a.diair of obstetrics, to the Otagp University Council, as a trust firadj to be. , used for the benefit of-dbste-trie'al. education in the Dominion .by" means of-■ travelling scholarships of obstetrics and. diseases of women for New Zealand "graduates of medicine, and also.for, the.endowmerit'of research work in obstetrical matters in the Dominion.

The society's solicitors advise that' it: is quite in; order for the surplus, to be used: for this purpose. '■"'.. ' • .;,

The trust will be administered .by a board consisting of representatives'', of Otago . University,' the medical school and the Obstetrical Society. '-;

The society considers that the greatest benefit to the Dominion will-result if for the next. 15 years ■ the revenue from this £0000 is devoted entirely to travelling scholarships, but in order to make provision for-thc distant future it.has included the word "research" in the title of the trust. Later in the day 10 members of the executive from all parts of New Zealand waited on the Hon. H. Atmore, Minister of Education, and .requested that a subsidy on the £25,000 handed over to the university authorities,; on May 21j; for the purpose of endowing the chair of obstetrics, ■ should be made available immediately. ' . '. •• -. ;The Minister assured the deputation of his desire to assist the council in the appointment.
