SERIOUS DAMAGE.
Leeward Islands Suffers from Hurricane. SIX DEATHS REPORTED. (British Official Wireless.) (Received 12 noon.) RUGBY, September 16.
The Governor of the Leeward Islands has telegraphed to the Colonial Secretary that an inspection after the recent hurricane in the West Indies showed that the damage done was undoubtedly serious, niaking considerable assistance imperative. Six deaths had been reported. Many of the injured were in Roseau Hospital and in the country districts. Half of the lime crop, 75 per cent of. the coconut crop, and the whole of the late cocoa crop was destroyed.
The crisis justified the new , policy of the grafting of lime trees, sine© nearly all withstood the hurricane. The food scarcity can be met by the contributions received or promised.
The total damage to- puolic works -was about £10,000, and to peasants' houses several thousands more.
