MAJIUKAir COUNCIL MEETS. PEOGEESS OF WORKS.
Although weatier conditions have been unfavourable good progress has been made with various works in the Manukau • county during tie past monti. Reporting to to-day's meeting of the county council, tie engineer (Mr. J. R. Page)" said there had been delays on I some undertakings, but no 'cessation of i work. A large amount of maintenance work had been carried out to combat the effects of heavy rain aud traffic. Roads in tie county," generally speaking, were in fairly good order, considering tie season of ihe year. ; Mangere Water Supply.—Referring to the eew and comprehensive water supplv scheme for tie Mangere Mr. Pap said that no definite ruling had yet been given by the Local Bodies- Loans Board on the subject. A great deal of detailed information had been asked for by the board, and this had been supplied. It was assumed that the board would give, the matter further consideration at its next meeting. Early future operations in the riding would include repairs to Watea. Road and the rebuilding of fractured abutments at JTavona Bridge. Panmure-Howick Highway.—ln the P&kuranga riding tie reconstruction nd concrete paving of tie Pan-nture-Howiek main highway was proceeding satisfactorily. The contractors were losing no opportunity of pushing tie work along. Approximately oneamd three-quarter "miles of pavement iad been laid, and tils was in use, witi the exception of a quarter of a mile. There had been minor difficulties witi traffic on detour roads, but no avoidable inconvenience had been caused.
Bridge Under Observation. —The Pannmre Bridge was still under close observation, and the position had not appreciably altered during tie month. The proposed new outlet road in tie Turanga Riding was still being investigated. Under tie unemployment relief scheme, large parties of men were still engaged on earthwork and culverting in the Wairoa riding. Improvement work, including drainage, kerbing, channelling, and footpath formation in tie Clevedon township was nearing completion, wiile the reconstruction *of MeNicoFs bridge was still proceeding. Building Returns.—The building inspector reported that during tie monti nineteen applications iad been received for the erection of buildings and for alterations and additions, etc Permits iad been issued to tie value of £2336. Work had been carried out principally in the Mangere { £1016) and Papatoetoe { £1205} ridings. Infectious Diseases.—Seven cases of infectious diseases were reported during the month, including two of diphtheria, two of pneumonia, and one each of scarlet fever, tuberculosis, and erysipelas.
