ADDRESS ON WORLD PEACE
' Fully 150 members of the; Devonport Orphans' Club , assembled on Saturday evening, when a- very attractive programme was provided. Sir George Richardson, > former Administrator of* Western Samoa, was chairman. ,In introducing Sir George, the vicepresident, Mi-. H. b. VV. King, stated that the'guests for the evening were Captain Gillespie,.Lieut. Haslam, Mi\ Archibald, and Commandant Sawyer, of the Salvation Army. , Sir George spoke of the League of Nations and disarmament. "It will be ,a long time before will be quite sure that war can be abolished," he saul. " Nothing will be done to place England in a weak position. The League of Nations is out to educate the children and the people, and give them ideals to work up to. ■ They could rest assured that nothing would be done so, foolish as to cut down armaments before England • was assured; of security, r The League of •Nations would not be a success unless jtlie people willed it. ' . - v '. , Speaking of the discontent in India, the speakei ,: stated that he made it his business to' ascertain first hand from respond sible Indians what was behind their minds, and discoveried. that they: required a constitution like that possessed by Australia, and ulitil they got home rule they never would be satisfied. The trouble in India had come to stay. It was part of the evolution of the world. Musical -and vocal items were contributed by Mr. C. Wood's orchestra, Mr. B. Ingall's orchestra, and Messrs. J. McMinn, McSkimming, Wheeler, and J. Lanigan. Prior to the commencement of the programme, Mr.' D'Authreau, on behalf of the club's orchestra, presented the club with a gong. He said that of the original members ,of the orchestra, 21 years ' ago, ..there remained • but four, who had been actively associated * with .the club, and therefore to mark the', occasion the presentation of -a'gong was agreed to. The chairman thereupon sounded the gong, and thanked the "orchestra: members for their gift.. ■
