HARES TOO PLENTIFUL.
(From Our Own' Correspondent.)
ROTORUA, Sunday.
A big attendance, and good jumping were features of.the second meet.'of the lxotorua Hunt. Club . at, Ngongotalia yesterday. The .' weather was -beautifully fine, but the c01d,.; dry. wind; again made, it difficult for I the hounds to follow the scents picked- up, ; The hares were (also too plentiful, and .this helped 1 to cause confusion. , Nevertheless, the afternoon produced; some capital sport. The ■; meet assembled, at Isdaile's Corner, and took-oif on.the 'first-run just past the Waitete Stream. There -was a splendid display of -jumping on. Mr.' J. Smith's, fajjm. , The. hunt next entered Mr. George Hampson's ..property,-; where a couple of pleasa'nt runs, were enjoyed without, a kill. This is ideal country for hunting, and followers -in'; motor, cars and on motor cycles obtained a good view. Indeed, one motor cyclist, with a little assistance, negotiated a. jump. The pack made a,. good - run through ; the fern country, but as .no fewer than three hares were started; it. was hard;o'n,the dogs. Considerable • amusement was caused by a Maori dog putting up a hare on his own account, and'there was good sport until he lost the:. quarry in the scrub. On another occasion a hare ran straight.for-the pack, but lie realised his mistake in time and showed the dogs a clean pair of heels. , After the day's -.sport the hunt and followers made their way. to the Ngongotalia Hall, where a ladies' committee had a plentiful supply- •of V refreshments. Before leaving, the huntsman, Mr. Wynne Brown, thanked the Ngongotalia residents for their hospitality, and Mr. J. S. Martin responded.
