'' ; NOT EASY -OF FULFILMENT. | (From Our Own Correspondent.) - ; , VANCOUVER, August 11.. ; The scrapping of Canadian trade treaties, perhaps as many as fifty, which was -regarded as assured if the King- Government was defeated and the Bennett Conservative -party returned (as has happ'ened) is' now. regarded as unlikely; atvleast for some time. During , his .election, campaign,' B. . Bennett declared that if his party ;were.successful in the balloting it.would abrogate every trade agreement ''operating injuriously toj Canada.", In this-con-mecfion lie mentioned, in particular, the treaties with, Australia, New Zealand and France. Upon .election, however, he finds himself facing a situation such that to attempt-to revise Canada's foreign trade relations at,this, time would create, chaos. ' ' Mr. .'Bennett is being -held to -liis feleytion -pledge to call a special session of the new Parliament, as soon as. possible .to consider measures to alleviate www* ploymerit. ; ' Immediately' afterwards he must' leave, for the Imperial Conference in, London. As a result 'the whole matter of . trade . treaties and tariff duties will .'be' deferred until his return, the' date of which is problematical. Meanwhile there is keen speculation as to what, will become of the Kn'S Government's.' attempt to increase intrrtEmpire trade by means of preferences. It' proposed to replace many of -' {9 imported articles, and particularly those bought from the -United States,! with goods -from the British Isles' and; Donn*. nio'ns. The< Conservative party, however, called for the .development- of trade cn a ''Canada'. First" basis,, that is •"reasonable'? protective tariffs and hj' •the building up of Canadian industry. ; • Just how Mr. Bennett w.ill reconcile his "reasonable" protective tariff with the movement for greater preiereiic-. for nations -within the Empire, is sonicthing: • which.. is being awaited,-' with, interest ;bpth'in Canada and in the Q;< 'Country.*., " .. . . ; . ; 'r. : j
