WHEEL AND TRACK NOTES.
(By ORION.) The American-bred mare Belle Keller has foaled a colt to Author Dillon (2.8 and 4.21 4-5) and is to be mated with Silk Thread this season.
When sent out recently to do a trial against time, the world's'champion trotter,. Peter Manning played up for forty minutes before he could be induced to trot.
That good trotter Rose Bingen, who was always well looked after in handicaps at Auckland meetings, has been mated with the Great Northern Derby winner, Great Parrish.
The Tonbridge — Unique gelding, Antique, has been leased by Mr. D. R. Cullinane to trainer J. H. Wallace. At present he bears a very bright appearance, and is one of the most likely candidates to keep Te Aroha in the racing limelight during the present season.
F. Smith is slipping the work into Antonia Direct whenever the tracks afford the opportunity. Tlje nuggety son of Wellington Direct may want a race or two before he is right at his best, and at Christmas time re will probably be found winning a race or two.
W. Willetts is again one of the regulars at Epsom with his pacers Nathaniel and Oliver Thorpe, both of whom have been spelling. Willetts did not have the luck to win a race with either of the pair last season, though both secured place money and improved their handicap times.
Sunshower, recently purchased from Mr. Revell by Mr. W. Walker, of Papatoetoe, has arrived from the South and has joined T. G riinmond's team. Sunshower wa3 a smart mare over, all distances and with ordinary luck should get a stake or two for her new owner.
At present there does not appear to be much chance of any Auckland three-year-old winning the Great Northern Derby. Great Fame was showing a lot of pace a few months back, but he got on his toes and it was decided to spell him for a few weeks. He is back in work, but not showing the same speed as when a two-year-old. Worthy Chief and Worthy Nor raced at the relief meeting and did not shape like Derby winners.
At Tamahere R. A. McMillan has a good team in steady work. He had no luck with Prince Pedro, Brutus or Enawah at the Auckland meeting last month, but he does not often go through a two days' fixture without providing a winner. Machine Gun is being given a light preparation, and another being prepared for racing ahead is First Flight. This filly has a fine turn of speed and I she should be one of the best of her age I this season.
The now five-year-old Great Way is in work in the South and it will be interesting to note whether this season he makes amends for the many disappointments in the past. When a three-year-old, and trained at Epsom by H. Kinnamont, the chestnut son of Peterwah displayed rare speed for a trotter of his age. but when it came to racing he was a different proposition entirely and would not trot solid. His best performance was in winning the Dunollie Handicap at Greymouth last January. The distance was twelve furlongs and a half, and Great Way went 3.44 1-5.
