LEADER RETIRES.

VICTORIAN EX-PREMIER.

MELBOURNE, August 20.

Owing to health reasons Sir William McPherson, Leader of the Opposition in tho Victorian Parliament, formerly Premier of Victoria, has resigned from politics.

Sir William McPherson lias represented Hawthorn in the Legislative Assembly since 1913. He was treasurer, 1917-23. He became leader of the Opposition on July 0, 1927, and formed his first Ministry in November, 1928, after the defeat of the Labour Government of Mr. E. J. Hogan by 34 vote 3to 28. His Government was defeated on December 12, 1929, by 36 votes to 28, and Mr. Hogan again assumed power. Formerly Sir William was Commissioner of the Melbourne Harbour Trust for 12 years, and president of the Melbourne Chamber of Commerce. He was created a Knight of the Order of the British Empire in 1923.
