WOODHILL.
Mrs. Stanley Phillips presided over a good attendance of members of the Woodhill Women's- Institute on Wednesday afternoon. An interesting lesson on tatting was given hy 3lrs. S. Phillips. The younger members were entertained by Mrs. George McDonald, who gave them a demonstration of knitting tea cosies! The hostesses were Mrs. Quarrie and Mrs. Ted Phillips. * HOBSONVILLE. A meeting of the Hobsonville Women's Institute was held last Thursday, when Mrs. W. Oekleston presided, and a demonstration of washing with an electric washing machine was given. The remits for the annual meeting of the Auckland Provincial Federation of Women's Institutes were discussed in readiness for the meeting next month. Afternoon tea was served by the hostess, Miss Armistead and Mrs. Oekleston. EDGECUMBE. j Edgecumbe Women's Institute opened the August meeting with the institute song. After business was concluded, Mrs. Broadmoor gave an interesting demonstration of the making of paper flowers, and gave a bunch to be sold for the funds. A competition for "something new from something old" brought in many pretty and useful articles. The roll call was answered with home hints. The hostesses were Mesdames Irving, Claydon, Will and Goldthorpe. * OPOTIKI. The Woodlands Women's Institute met. on Wednesday, Mrs. Mulhern presiding. An instructive address on straw- j berry culture was given by Mrs. Mc- ! Gregor. A best joke roll call caused a good deal of merriment. Mrs. Sargent contributed a recitation and Mrs. J. Armstrong a son*, both items being well received. A competition was won by Mrs. McGregor. The hostesses were Mesdames Joblin, Barbour and Hennessy. BIRKDALE. The monthly meeting of the Birkdale Women's Institute was held on Tuesday, when Mrs. Gilpin presided. The remits for the forthcoming annual meeting of the Auckland Federation were discussed. Mrs. Gilpin was elected delegat-e to the Dominion Conference to be held in Wellington in October. Mrs. F. A. Clarke and Mrs. J. Clark gave recitations, and Miss A. Collins, a song. Competitions were won by Mrs. Shorman and Mrs. Williams. The hostesses were Mrs. Hewson, Mrs. Hughes, Miss M. Hughes and Miss Imrie. Members enjoyed a pleasant afternoon recently at Mrs. McGregor's residence, when the funds benefited thereby. A wireless programme was enjoyed.
HTJNTLY. The monthly meeting of the Huntly Women's Institute was held in the Presbyterian Hall on Thursday evening. Mrs. J. Dodds presided and extended a welcome-.to new members. It was proposed that the monthly meeting be held every third Thursday in the month in the Presbyterian Hall. It was decided to affiliate with the Auckland branch of the institute as soon as possible, and in order to do this a membership list was compiled. After other business had been dealt with, an interesting sketch was read by Mrs. Chisholm entitled "The Life of Elizabeth Fry.""' A musical parcel was afterwards handed round and caused much amusement, the winner being Mrs. Fleming. A nice supper was partaken of and formed a brief interlude, the hostesses for the evening being Mesdames Dodds and Cairns. Community singing and recitations then followed. MATAMATA.
Mrs. L. Evan presided over a wellattended August meeting. The remits for the Dominion Conference were disdussed. The president was appointed as delegate to the Auckland September Conference. Attention was drawn to the recent reports in the papers of Women's Institute conferences in England. One new member. Miss Stevens, was elected. During the afternoon Miss Sybil Primrose. of Hamilton, rendered several songs, and Mrs. J. Montague gave pianoforte solos. Mrs. A. Lambourne gave a demonstration on paper flowers. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames Hitchcock, Robertson, Saunders ami Miss Johnston. A roll call of home hints brought many useful ideas. A clothes drive, among the members resulted in a large parcel of clothing being forwarded to Sister Esther.
MANAWAHE,
•Members of the Mauawahe Women's Institute met last Thursday, when a pleasant time was spent. Mrs. Kendall presided. Three new members wercwelcomed. It was decided to send delegates to the Auckland Provincial Federation Council meeting to be held in September. Also to the Dominion Conference of Women's Institutes to be held in Wellington during. October. A vote of thanks to the sub-cominittee for the able manner in which they arranged the euchre and dance was carried. AH members joined in sending a message of best wishes for a speedy recovery to the secretary, who has just undergone a serious operation. A demonstration on how to net a hammock was given by Mrs. Meredith. The roll-call, '"a verse on the Institute," unearthed not a little talent. A competition for the best article made from a tin or bottle brought forth many unique entries, the winner tieins: Mrs. Meredith, with a coffee set. The meeting closed with a dainty tea, served by Mrs. Seabourne and the Misses M. and L. Kendall.
