HIGH COMMISSIONER'S CABLE

The Department of Agriculture has received the following cablegram, dated August 23, from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, London:— Tallow.—There is a better demand for spot mutton at the last rates quoted. Mixed made 6d per cwt more, but little was available. No auction will be held until next week and c.i.f. prices are unchanged. Hemp.—The Manila market is easier, with more offering, but fail - business has been done. K grade, August-October and October-December shiptaents, sold at £20 15/. ■ ~ ; Sisal.—The African sisal market is quiet and easier. No. 1 fair, average quality, afloat and early shipment, sold at £21 5/, with sellers (any shipment until the end of the year) at £21 15/. No. 2 was neglected at about 20/ lower. Good marks, both grades, made 5/ more. Sisal tow is idle, with nominal value lor No. 1, £17 10/; No. 2, £15 10/. In Mexicans sisal there are reported further sales of 75,000 bales to America at last prices. The market is quiet. Good white August-October shipment, as quoted at £23 10/. The New Zealand market is idle and unchanged, with no first-hand sales reported. Wool. —The Bradford market is quiet, only hand-to-mouth business being done. Merino tops quotations are firm. Crossbreds are a little uncertain.

.Fruit—The market for apples is very slow. Current prices for New Zealand Dougherty are 8/ to 10'* Sturmers, 5/6 to 9/; Tasmanian Stunners, 3/6 to 6/; bulk, 4/6. Eggs.—The market is quiet and unsold stocks are heavy. English made 17/ to 18/ per long 100 (120 eggs); Irish, 14/ to 15/; Danish, Belgian, and Dutch, 12/ to 14/9; French, 11/ to 14/; Lithuanian,, Chinese and Polish, 7/6 to 11/6. CHICAGO WHEAT VALUES. (Received 0 a.m.) CHICAGO, August 25. Wheat for delivery in September is quoted at Chicago at 89 cents per bushel. For December delivery the rate is 93/« cents, for March 98% cents, and for May $1.01%.
