The first race on Saturday is timed to start at .12.30 p.m. and tlie last race at 4.50 p.m.

There i- was only jogging work at Epsom this morning owing to tlie tracks being very heavy. Most of the horses are well forward, but another fast workout would sharpen them up. i>- " ; .

L. F. Berkett arrived from Nelson yesterday with a team of three. The horses are Nelsonian, Nelson's Chum and Ocklev Wood. All three are looking well and will be well supported in their engagements at the fixture.

When Lady Yvonne won iat the Cambridge meeting she paced the mile aind a half in 3.34. Tlie daughter of Our Thorpe is on 3.37, but the ; opposition will be stronger than she defeated in Ma v last. ■

The stallions, Truman Direct'"- - £nd Grattan Loyal, recently brought oiit from America, and who have been in quarantine at Motuihi Island, were released yesterday and will go to Christchurch. Grattan Loyal is for F. Holmes, and Truman Direct for A. Hendricksen. A third stallion, Frank Worthy, is to take up duty at the Mardella Stud Farm at Otahuhu.

There is likely to be plenty of solid hacking for Little Guy, when J. T. Paul steps him out in the Ellerslie Handicap on Saturday. The son of Real Guy raced very consistently last season. He was second in- a mile race at Hawera in 2.15 4-5, and won ovpr tw.o .miles at Hawke's 4 ' 37 ' ? e6i i\g that he is on 4.43 iti'nlay, his price is not going to he

Gold Sovereign's best timo for two miles is 4.39 2-5, getting second. He is handicapped up to the limit on Saturday in being on 72yds, or 4.40, in the Onehunga Trot.

Floraline has done plenty of work at Otahuhu for S. Groat. The Florizel gelding is a fine stayer, but does not always go solid. He is on a 4.42 mark on Saturday, and last November went 4.39 3-5, getting second on the Epsom course.

Whakihihi, wlio is accepted for in the Ponsonby Handicap on Saturday, is one of the biggest horses in work in the Dominion. He was trained for a time last season by L. McMahon, at Epsom, but is now being prepared by his owner at Otahuhu.

Evelyn Locanda's best effort last season was when she finished second in the New Year Handicap on the final day of tho Auckland summer meeting. She ran exactly her handicap, 4.32, and the handicapper has not been lenient with the daughter of Brent Locanda, as she is still on 4.32.

Gang Awa's best races this season have been registered at two miles, but tho little pacer is to take on the fast mile on.Saturday, Gang AwaMast season wound up by winning the Cambridge Cup, arid then the Hobson Handicap at the Auckland winter'meeting; both races being over a two-mile journey.

Enawah raced most consistently at the back end of the season. After finishing third in the Hawera Cup in 4.34 in April, she came out on the second day of the meeting and won the Waimate Plains Handicap in 4.35. She followed this up by beating all but Harold Logan in the Adams Memorial, which was decided on a very heavy track, and there can be uo doubt about her ability to see out a solid two fliiles.

[ Tho Hova gelding Dealer, who is now in. R. A. McMillan's team' at" Tamahere, is .in two races on Saturday, and looks to have ag; chance in whichever he contests. He has none the best of the handicap in the mile and a quarter, the MoWt Roslw-1 . Handicap, as his best time for ten furlongs is 2.52 1-5, to third place, and he is now on the front of a 2.52 class. In the Ellerslie Handicap, the 4.46 two miles, he is on 60-yards, or 4.41, and has gone 4.37 4-5 finishing third. That was in the Cambridge Cup in May last. ; ■

Great Ballin showed himself to he a much-improved horse last season, especially over sprint distances. He won the Kopu Handicap, one mile and a quarter, at the Thames, then the Waipa Handicap at Hamilton, tramping the mile in 2.14, and/in heavy going beat all but Country King in the Liverpool Handicap, one mile and a quarter, at the Auckland winter meeting, on a very heavy track. But for going a bad break early in the race Great Ballin would have won, as Lc dropped back last, and it was a fine run which landed him in second position at the finish.

It is more: than three months since the pony Eclipse Rock made a circus record, of 2,9 1-5 for ponies, 14 hands or under, at the Royal Sydney Show. The performance was put up with the driver hanging oii to the reins of a galloping pacemaker. It was thought the New South Wales Trotting Club, as the governing body of trotting in that State, would have put a spoke Jn the wheel of such a performance registered under such ridiculous conditions, but so far it has made no move, says the "Sydney Sportsman." The show people declared the record shall stand, and future attempts against the track record may be made in same manner. As a matter of fact, the show flouts the New South Wales Trotting Club, stating that its speed competitors are not governed by trotting club rules. It might be sup-, posed that the first object of an agricultural'society would he the improvement. of the various breeds of horses, but if- it encourages Tom Mix stunts such as that of Eclipse Rock, it should change its name to the Royal Circus. The hoppled pacer is a dangerous conveyance at the best of times, even with the driver's whole attention bestowed upon it, but with one hand holding the reins and the other hanging on to a galloping horse alongside dragging it along, a Serious accident might happen.
