ANZAC BANNER.
WON BY PARNEIiIi SCHOOL
GENERAL RICHARDSON'S ADDRESS,
The Anzac Essay Banner, which is awarded annually under a c°mpetition orcranised by the Returned. Soldieis Association among the primary schools of Auckland province, has been won this year by the Parnell School. The pre sentation ceremony took place at tie school yesterday, when General Sir George Richardson addressed tbapupils. He was introduced by Mr. J- W. Mit chell, 'chairman of the Parnell School Committee. . , , , General Richardson said he wished to speak on behalf,, not only of the soldiers and sailors, but also for the ntirses, social workers and others who had served in the Great War. They had suffered trials and made sacrifices in order that the generations that were to follow would not hav© to 'suffer as they had. The duty of the children of to-day was that they should live for their country—to aim at the highest in citizenship, to work for the good of civilisation and the promotion of world peace. The memory of those who had fallen in the Great War would help them in. their efforts toward this ideal. The children of New Zealand had not suffered as the children of Europe had suffered, said General Richardson, and thev had" been afforded wonderful opportunities -to make their country happy and prosperous. The excellence of the essays written by the Parnell pupils showed how keenly they appreciated this fact and he congratulated the school on their success. General Richardson then presented the banner to Mr. F. Murphy, headmaster of the Parnell School, who replied on behalf of the- pupils. , ' The Anzac Banner, which was first awarded in 1922, was won by the Cornwall Park School in 1927 and 1928, and by the Parnell School last year.
