SINKING OF TAHITI.
Passengers Transhipped With No Mishaps. PENYBRYN'S CAPTAIN'S STORY. (United P.A.-Electric Telegraph-Copy right) (Received 12 noon.) SUVA, this day. The Penybryn reached Suya this morning with five tons of coal in her bunkers. Captain Salvesen reports that on the receipt of a -wireless to look out for the Tahiti's cutters he sat on the cross-trees all day. At 7.30 p.m. he sighted rockets and reached the Tahiti at 10.30. He went close to the vessel and offered to transfer the people, but there was no urgent need. He stood by. The, vessel did not settle down until the Penybryn left at two in the afternoon on Tuesday. On the arrival of the Ventura the Penybryn lowered boats under the mate and assisted transferring the passengers and light luggage. There was no confusion on the Tahiti. -The winches were going to the last. Heavy baggage was left aboard. The Penybryn picked up a large trunk owned by a naval officer and is landing it at Auckland. The sea was fairly calm all the time. Captain, Toten reported that there was four feet of water in No. 4 hold, eleven, feet to the 'tween decks, and No. 3 hold and the engine room were flooded. Captain Salvesen asked Captain Toten on his arrival the cause of the accident and the number of the ship's complement, but received no reply.
