SOCIAL GATHERINGS.
At "Rangiatea," the residence of Dr. Hilda Nortlicroft, Symondfl Street, there was 'a large gathering of women members of the Reform League. The flowers in the reception room were daffodils. Those present busy and enjoyable afternoon. Afternoon tea was served, ■.■*' ' * ' • The monthly meeting of the Otahuhu Women's Christian Temperance Union was held- in the Presbyterian Sunday School Hall on Thursday afternoon, with Mrs. Eccersall in the chair. Mrs. Kedshaw gave a paper on the League of Nations and what it is doing all over the world for peace and other reforms. Afterwards afternoon tea. was served. * • » » Mrs. McWilliam, of Sheffield, will address the members of the Lyceum Club at the next luncheon talk. She will speak on "More Activities for British Women." Mrs. McWilliam, who is travelling in the Dominion with her son, is very interested in the work done by Women's Institutes, in whose behalf she has done good work as a speaker. « » «• * A pleasant little function took place at the home of the president of the Auckland Toy Dog Club, Mrs. George Herbert, Royal Oak, when the prizes from the annual show were distributed by Mrs. Herbert. There were about 60 guests present. Musical items were contributed by Miss Lingard and Miss Cross. A very enjoyable evening was spent. . . # -» # • The monthly meeting of the St. Andrew's branch of the Mothers' Union was held on Thursday afternoon, when the service was conducted by the Rev. Willis. There was a large attendance, and Mrs. W. Wood presided. Members of St. Barnabas and also St. Albans' branches were the guests of the. afternoon. After tea was served Sister Pat, of the Auckland Gity Mission, gave an address. A happy meeting closed;with a hearty vote of thanks to the speaker. , # • • *
The annual meeting of the Te Puke Lyceum Club was held in the club rooms on Thursday, Mrs. T. P. Lemon presiding. The report showed a satisfactory financial position. During the past season many enjoyable social functions were held. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mrs. T. P. Lemon; vice : president, Mrs. H. A. Vercoe; joint secretaries, Mesdames L. Booker and H. Gibbirigs; committee, Mesdames J. Ball, Innes, Vercoe, A. N. Hickson, F. H. Wilkie, T. H. Wilsone, ! and G. T. Simpson. * * # « The monthly meeting of the Onehunga branch of the League of Mothers was 'held on Thursday in ; the Orphans' Hall. The new president, Mra. Jordan, occupied the chair and made feeling reference to the death of Mies Arey, the late Auckland provincial secretary. Mrs. Victor Macky gave a talk on the psychology of nursery rhymes. Madame Milbura added to the members' pleasure by her rendering of four songs, accompanied by Mrs. Jury. Afternoon tea closed a pleasant gathering.
An enjoyable evening was held at the residence of Mrs. J. Ash, Dominion Road, on Wednesday evening. Mrs. Ash received the guests wearing duchess blue crepe de chine with Oriental trimming. Musical items were contributed by Miss B. Feaver and Mr. L. Gibson Blackie and a conjuring act by Mr. C. Feaver. Among those present were:—Mesdames S. Stevenson, B. Burdett, L. Gibson Blackie, C. Feaver, L. Heeseman; Misses F. Bobere, G. Stevenson, A. Wiltshaw, K. Feaver, V. Smith, F. Feaver, I. Davis.
The . Eden branch of the W.C.T.U. held its monthly meeting in the Methodist schoolroom, Dominion Road, on Wednesday. Mrs. Hayr presided. Delegates were appointed to attend the district convention, to be held in September. Miss Waterston, a missionary from the South Seas Evangelical Mission in the Solomon Islands, gave an interesting account of the methods used in teaching the natives. The speaker also detailed the plan of her desire to start a free Bible school for girls in' Auckland.' Afternoon tea was served.
The Wellington Federation of University Women held its monthly meeting recently at the residence of Dr. Sylvia Chapman. The meetingitook the form of a very enjoyable "literary evening." Miss V. N. Greig read an interesting paper on Charles Lamb, with special reference to his character, friendships, love for his sister, and also for children. Short extracts, aptly chosen from his 'essays, illustrated these characteristics and brought out the style of the essayist. * « • • Mrs. S. Hempton, formerly of Wellington, and her band of New Zealand women, have instituted "Haeremai" teas as part of their New Zealanders' Association activities in Sydney. At the first of the series, held at David Jones', there was a large gathering and a delightful time was spent. _A programme oj music was supplied by Misses Elsie and Nellie Black (both members of the well-known Black family of instrumentalists), Lillian Quinn (of Auckland), and Mrs. Walter Treleaven.
The annual meeting of the' Epsom ■branch of the League of Mothers , was held in the Baptist Church Hall,(lnverness Avenue, on Thursday afternoon. Mrs. T. H. Macky, president, * occupied the chair.. Reports showed the meetings had been well attended throughout the year. Thanks to the Baptist Church authorities for the use of the school hall were- expressed. The financial statement showed a satisfactory state. During the year several books have been donated to the branch by members. The election of officers was:—President, Mrs. T. H. Macky (re-elected); vice-presi-dents, Mrs. A. St. Clair-Brown, Mrs. W. H. Gummer, Mrs. D. MacOormick; hon. secretary, Mrs. G.. E. Smerdon; treasurer, Mrs. Beavis; librarian, Mrs. A. Jones; committee, Mesdames D. Macky, T. H. Hill, H. G. Warren, G. Uren, Slade and White. The sneaker for the afternoon was Major Gordon, her subject being "Women, Keepers of Home," stressing the sanctity of marriage and the duties of the-mother, also the value of home influence ancl the importance of parental, control.' The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames H. D. Bamford and G. Uren. , :
The Tower Tearooms was the scene of an enjoyable dance, given by- the staff of the New Zealand Loan and-Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., last Thursday evening. A large gathering of the Grey Lynn Women's Political .Organisation met at the residence of Mrs. E. J. Sexton, who made reference to the unwarranted attack on Mr. J. S. Fletcher, M.P., by the member for Rotorua, and a unanimous •vote of confidence in the Grey Lynn member was passed with acclamation. It was decided to send a letter to the Postmaster-General, the Hon. J. B. Donald, thanking him for his successful effort in securing a post office for Grey Lynn, also asking him to use his influence in obtaining postal , facilities for Westmere. Two resolutions were passed: "That the Minister of Education he approached in reference to establishing a school for the deaf children in Auckland," and "That a letter.be sent to the Hon. A. J. Stallworthy asking him to facilitate the erection of rest homes for the aged in the four main centres —this as a memorial to the late Sir Joseph Ward." After the business of the meeting was closed, afternoon tea was served and musical items were contributed by Mesdames Fort and Cavaye.
Numerous .competitions were a feature of ah evening arranged by Mrs. H. C. Ernest and-tfie Misses Burnside and held in the. Renown. Hall, Papatoetoe, on Thursday evening in aid of the funds of St. George's Anglican Church, Papatoetoe. There' was a large attendance. The hall was " flanked with card tables and during the evening a programme of dancing was . carried out. , A > ping pong tournament and a darts Competition were held in the supper room. Winners were Mrs. Bayliss and' Mr. Jepson (cards); Miss K. Leonard and Mr. E. Burnside (ping pong); Miss A. Fitness, and Mr. J. Ranum (darts). A novelty competition was won by Mrs. J. J. Valentine. The pianist was' Mrs. Collings.
A party was given by the Victoria League Ever Ready Committee, when 'nine motor cars, filled with members and friends, drove out to' the Knox Home on Thursday afternoon. Mrs. Thomson took out a splendid collection of magazines and papers, which were distributed amongst the patients. A charming entertainment was arranged by Mrs. A. Bulloch. Mrs. Moseley gave a piano solo; songs were rendered by Mrs. Kenny, Mrs. Sullivan, Miss Rose Kennedy and Miss Flora. Robertson; a violin solo by Miss Dewing; and Miss E. Adkins. and Miss Fey Reynolds recitations. The accompanists were Mrs. Dewing, Mrs. Irene Robertson, and Miss Joyce Porter. One of the patients, Mr. McLean, played a 'cello solo, which was greatly appreciated. Tobacco and sweets were distributed, and afternoon tea and chatting to patients brought a happy afternoon to an end. Amongst those present were: Mrs. J. Macfarlane, chairman of the Ever Ready Committee, Mesdames L. S. Richards, Hyber, Ambury, Sheates, Johnson, Dowell, Snell, Abbott, Thomson, Bulloch, Griffiths, Symes, Angwin, Smith, McGuire, Kohn, Cerutty, Worrall, Fitchett, Gulliver, Misses Murray (2), Leape, Jteesing and Calder.'
