TEMPORARY PERMIT.

FOR AUSTRALIAN CITIZEN.

PASSENGER BY ULIMAROA,

Although lie is the son of a naturalised British subject, Mr. J. Unkovich, who arrived from Australia by the Ulimaroa on Tuesday, has been able to obtain only a temporary permit to enter New Zealand. Up till 7 p.m. yesterday the Customs Department had refused to allow him to land at all,'although he had a letter from the Australian Home and Territories Department stating that lie was a British subject'. He had 'come all the Way from Perth to visit his cousin in Dargaville, but the Customs Department would not let him set foot in this country. The Department demanded proof positive that he was. really and truly the J.. Unkovich whose papers he carried, and, there being no one in Auckland who could identify him, he was told he would have to return to Australia by the steamer. Last evening, however, two of Mr. Unkovieh's countrymen consented to guarantee a £10 bond, on condition of which he was granted a permit: allowing him to stay in 'New Zealand for two weeks. This may be extended if he can produce definite evidence of identification.
