Gallant Fox, a two-year-old colt by Hunting Song from Smoke Concert, lias been showing promise in his track work at Hastings. He is expected to develop into a smart galloper. Lovely Boy was given liis first trial over the Ellerslie steeplechase fences yesterday morning and jumped very encouragingly for a beginner. He is engaged in the Greenmount Steeples to-morroAV. Postman, a four-year-old gelding by Archiestown from Pillar Box, has been paid up for in thd Hunters' Hurdles and the Hunters' Flat Handicap, one mile and a quarter/ at the Hawke's Bay Hunt meeting, which takes place to-morrow. Ruby Dawn has been indulged in several schooling tasks over hurdles at Te Rapa recently and is reported to be showing promise. The Day Comet mare has been nominated for the Rata Hurdle Race to be run at the Marton meeting next month. Rodger, who claims an engagement in the Pakuranga Hunt' Cup. was out working on the track yesterday morning and looks in good order to tackle his contest over the steeplechase country. R. Olive has been engaged to ride the Waikatoowned gelding. My Own and Jenny Diver are reported to be in excellent condition to begin the new racing season. Simba, their stablemate, is also doing well at Hastings. These promising three-year-olds are expected to make their first appearance this season at the Wanganui meetingnext month.
Although not engaged at the Pakuranga meeting, Stimulant is shaping very satisfactorily in his work at Ellerslie and will be seen out at sonic of the spring meetings. He has not had enough racing to allow his future prospects to be summed up correctly, but, judged on his track doings, he should be capable of winning hack races around the country circuit. The aged Day Comet gelding Desert Glow has arrived to fulfil his .Tellicoe Handicap engagement, in which he will be ridden by J. Mcßae. He is looking as well as ever and hit out in impressive style in a gallop over five furlongs on the course proper yesterday morning. Desert Glow does not act too Avell in heavy ground, but if the rain holds off the going will be good for this time of the year and he should put up a creditable showing. The King Lupin gelding Awamutu was responsible for a smart gallop over four furlongs on the course proper yesterday morning, putting up the best time over that distance. Awamutu only managed to win one race last season, but, despite that fact, he is a very speedy gelding, who is likely to do better with age. He has done well throughout the winter and F. Loomb has him very forward in condition at the present time.
