SOCIAL GATHERINGS.
The Otahuhu Volunteer Fire Brigade held an old-time dance evening in the Kingsford Hall last Saturday, when, a good selection of dance numbers was played. Two 'balloon dances and a Monte Carlo waltz competition were held. The latter was won by Miss Rona Boncham and Mr. J.-Jensen.. * * * * Last evening Lord Jellicoe Lodge, R.A.0.8., held a ladies' night at Devonport, when about 70 couples were in attendance. This is the first social event of this kind for 1930 and the evening augured well for future functions. Dancing provided most of the evening's entertainment, and musical items were also given. Mr. H. S. W. King gave an interesting address. ♦* * * A social recently held in the Paerata Hall proved very successful. Prizes for euchre were won by Mrs. Millar and .Mr. J. McLeod. Cowan, M. Ingram, Gladys Ross, E. Murtagh, Queenie Buckeridge. * * * * The journalism section of the League of New Zealand Penwomen met on Tuesday evening, under Mrs. Richmond. A letter from the president, Mrs. I. M. Cluett, containing helpful criticism of a collection of poems submitted the previous month, was read by the secretary. The exercise for the evening took the form of an allegory. Many papers were read and discussed. A presentation from the section to the club rooms of a handsome notice board and letter rack with copper mountings, made by Miss Melville, was inspected and greatly admired. The evening concluded with an animated discussion concerning the future activities of the section. McLean, Mrs. Ponder, Mrs. Sydney Smith, Mrs. Richmond, Miss Melville, Miss Fleming, Miss Dash, Miss Burton, Miss Quinii, Miss Whitelaw, Miss Peacock, Miss Spurling, -» ■ # » The annual meeting of the Mont Le Grande Croquet Club was held in the club's pavilion recently, when Mrs. Cole, president, presided over a large attendance of members. The secretary's report showed the club to be in a good financial position. The election of officers resulted as follows: —President, Mrs. Cole; vice-president, Mrs. Peckham; secretary and treasurer, Mrs. Thomson; general committee, Mesdames Sessions, Thomas, Richardson and Taylor; match committee, Mesdames Cole, Thomson and Richardson; green superintendent, Mrs. Robertson; hon. auditor, Layland; social committee, Mesdames Thomson, Taylor, Tremain, Peckham, Stacey, Sessions, Bush; delegates Auckland Croquet Association, Mesdames Cole and Thomson. The following ladies were successful in club matches during the year: —A and B doubles, Mr. Cole and Mrs. Fleming; handicap singles (Dennison Cup), Mrs. Thomas; C singles, Mrs. Scott.' The A and B buttons are held by Mrs. Cole and Mrs. Williams respectively.
A successful and enjoyable card afternoon was held by United Croquet Club in the J.C.L. tearooms 011 Wednesday, v,-heu about 100 guests were entertained v'ith bridge and '"500." The president, Mrs. Powley, welcomed the guests. The prizes for bridge vrerc won by Mrs. Thornton and Mrs. Mcßride, and the "500" prize by Mrs. Watson. Amongst those present were:—Mesdames Powley, X. Mrs. W. Riminer, of Parakai House, Helensvillc, recently entertained friends at a social evening*held for the purpose of raising funds to assist in the erection of a new Church of England at Parakai. A very pleasant evening was spent in cards and dancing, and several competitions were held. A sum of over £12 was raised for the church building fund.
A bridge party was given on Wednesday by Miss Marie Colson, of Bassett Road, Remuera. The hostess received in a bottle green satin frock, and the rooms were fragrant with violets and spring flowers. A dainty tea was served in the dining room. Those present were: —Misses Hilda Walkley, Lois Mahon, Joyce Herdman, Lois Cameron, Mary and Peggy Upton, Phyllis and Hilary Biss, Alice Bailey, June Prater, Zeta \Saunders, Dorothy Shera, C. Tattley, Marjorie Low.
The third annual ball of the Otaluihu section of the National Reserve Division of the St. John Ambulance Brigade was held in the Public Hall last Wednesday evening. The dance hall was decorated with streamers, from which hung coloured balloons. Superintendent Elliott and Corps Officer Mitchon were among the guests. The Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss Hart and Mr. Panckhurst, while the Mem to Carlo jazz competition was won by Miss Bowley and Mr. Richardson. A progressive 500 card competition was held for the non-dancers. The winners of the ladies' competition were Mrs. Speed 1, Mrs. Laundy 2, and Mrs. Day 3. In the gentlemen's division, Mr. H. White was first, Mr. McLaughlin second, and Mr. Haslip third. The Mayor, Mr. H. T. Clements, presented the trophies to the respective winners of the dancing and cai-d competitions.
A farewell evening was given for Mr. and Mrs. J.' Black and tlieir niece, Miss Fahy, who are leaving Turanga-o-moana after having resided there for ten years. After supper Mr. Poland, on behalf of those present, handed to Mr. and Mrs. Black a handsome chiming clock, suitably engraved; also two cut glass pickle jars in silver frames, as a token of the esteem with which they were regarded. Miss Faliy was presented with a bottle of scent and sprayer. * y * ■» , * A concert and dance were held in the Parish Hall, Northcote, last evening, in aid of the Brett Memorial Home at Takapuna. The programme included songs by Mrs. McKnight and Miss Sarau Stacpoole, and elocutionary items by Mrs. J. E. Mays. An ankle beauty competition "was judged by Mesdames J. F. Potter, A. Campbell and A. Cowie, and the Rev. Jasper Calder. The winners were Mrs. G. B. Minns and Miss Newman.' The Rev. Jasper Calder was auctioneer in the '"Slave Market," which augmented the takings. ° » -» t * An enjoyable afternoon was held at the residence of the Mayoress, Mrs.' F. A. Jones, in aid of the Dargaville Croquet Club. The hostesses were Mesdames F. A. Jones and W. Peterson. The winners of the card tournament were Mrs. G. N. Hayes and Mrs. Frank Gould. The president of the club, Mrs. W. Peterson, thanked all those who had attended the card tournaments and mad© them sucll a success, and Sirs. Capp, 011 behalf of the Croquet . Club, thanked the hostesses for the afternoon's amusement.
